Everything You Need to Know Before Your Wedding Day Timeline

If there's one thing I get asked about more than anything else, it's timelines. A well-built wedding day timeline is the difference between a day that feels rushed and stressful, and one that feels like the best day ever, relaxed, present, and fun. Here's how I help my couples build theirs.

Start With Your Must-Have Shots

Before we even talk about times, we talk priorities. Do you want a first look? Family portraits before the ceremony or after? A sunset couple's session? Once we know what matters most to you, we build the timeline backward from there.

Buffer, Buffer, Buffer

Every part of a wedding day takes longer than you think — hair and makeup runs behind, guests take a few extra minutes to get seated, the limo hits traffic. I always build in cushion time between events so one late start doesn't snowball into a rushed reception entrance.

A Sample Timeline (For a 4pm Ceremony)

  • 12:00pm — Getting ready photos begin (detail shots, hair/makeup, robe photos)

  • 1:30pm — First look + couple's portraits

  • 2:15pm — Wedding party photos

  • 2:45pm — Family formals

  • 3:30pm — Buffer / hide before ceremony

  • 4:00pm — Ceremony

  • 4:30pm — Cocktail hour (bonus couple's portraits if lighting allows!)

  • 5:30pm — Reception entrance

  • 6:00pm — Dinner

  • 7:00pm — Toasts, first dance, parent dances

  • 7:30pm — Golden hour portraits (my favorite part of the whole day)

  • 8:00pm — Open dance floor

  • 10:00pm — Send-off

Every timeline shifts depending on your ceremony time, season, and venue — but this gives you a sense of how the pieces fit together.

Don't Forget Golden Hour

If there's one slot I fight to protect on every timeline, it's a quick 10–15 minute window during golden hour for just the two of you. It consistently produces some of the most stunning, romantic images in the whole gallery, soft light, quiet moment, no crowd.

Choosing Your Venue Shapes Your Timeline

Indoor vs. outdoor ceremonies, how far apart your ceremony and reception spaces are, and how much natural light your venue gets all affect how we build your day. If you haven't locked in a location yet, check out some of Kansas City's most iconic wedding venues → for inspiration.
